Extra Cheese???

Domino's now has an app where you can just speak your order into your phone. They're the first large pizza chain who can now screw up your order three ways.

I'm Getting Better??

People have been asking me if I’ve recovered from the illness, which includes short term memory loss. I start to talk and then say, (seriously), “What was the question?”

Give Me a Break!

Today is the day when everyone starts thinking, "Where did I hide that other egg?"
Most people will never find the missing egg. Either the dog will find it or the smell will become so rancid, your neighbors will call the cops because they'll think you're a serial killer. Either way, the problem is, we need an extra day off following Easter. Many countries already do it and have for many years.
  • Austria.
  • Australia.
  • Belgium.
  • Canada.
  • Croatia.
  • Czech Republic.
  • Denmark.
  • Finland.
  • France.
  • Germany.
  • Guatemala.
  • Hungary.
  • Ireland.
  • Italy.
  • New Zealand.
  • Norway.
  • Poland
  • Sweden.
  • The Netherlands.
  • The United Kingdom
Just to name a few. Why not? Its all part of the celebration of the arrival of Spring, which. aside from allergies, is a very good thing! So why, in the United States, do we not take such holidays as Easter Monday or Boxing Day, the day after Christmas. I'll tell you why. We work too hard in the United States. It wasn't until I traveled abroad that I realized that this was true. In France, for example. I was asked, and not so politely, to leave a supermarket for going in to try to buy something at two o'clock in the afternoon. Why? This was their rest period following lunch. At first I was annoyed, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. It was a stress reliever from work.
France isn't the only country who practices such traditions. I didn't see it practiced in the UK,but I've heard they do the same thing in Italy. I can't personally verify that because I've never been, but I think it's true. Imagine if we did that in this country. Shareholders in most companies would go completely mad! After all, its the almighty bottom line that matters, not the health and well being of they employees; the ones who make the company tick.
I remember a time in my twenties when I was a national trainer for a very large retailer. We were in Hawaii for a training session/retreat. I was sitting with a Senior Vice President, having breakfast and talking about my future in the organization. Suddenly, the CEO of the company showed up and cut me off mid-sentence and asked the VP if he thought they were putting too much pressure on the customers to buy extended warranties, a very profitable part of our organization. I said to the CEO that I thought we were putting too much pressure on the employees to sell it and therefore the pressure was ultimately put on the customer to buy them. The CEO looked at me and very sarcastically said, "Who are you?" I said, "I'm your number one trainer in the country, so I know what kind of pressure the employees face." He said, "I couldn't care less about the employees; they're a dime a dozen. I care about the customers."
This guy clearly didn't understand the trickle down effect from associate to customer, never mind that the employees were the ones who would execute the strategies that the corporate fat cats created. Its hard to understand that this once billion dollar juggernaut is now out of business. What a shock.
So, I guess what I'm saying is that we have only a handful of companies in the US that treat employees like the valuable assets they are, and that's a shame. Companies like Google, In-N-Out Burger and The Ritz Carlton know how valuable their people are and treat them like it. I just wish more American companies would treat their employees better. It just might be the secret to increasing their bottom line and shareholder earnings.
See you tomorrow.

Cops!

I was pulled over yesterday, and I really did learn a valuable lesson. When the officer says "You were going fast", it's not good to say "Yeah? Well your Mom is fast."

Seriously, I know a lot of great police officers, who took the job to really protect and serve. Matt Pennington, Sam Tower, guys like that. And let's not forget about the women on the force either. Extraordinary people.

Unfortunately, there are others who put on the badge simply to have power over others. We see them on the news, because these knuckleheads somehow forget about their dash cam.

If you watch an episode of "Cops", everyone is on their best behavior. I think the Cops crew should stay with the knuckleheads. That would eliminate the problem. My brother says he hates cops. Why? Because he likes to speed. Seriously? You hate those that enforce the law, just so you can break it?

I would much rather live where laws are enforced. Can you imagine what it would be like if there were no speed limits? Montana is a prime example. They had no speed limits. You could go 120, as long as you weren't driving a Rambler. You'd be lucky to get up to 50 in one of those tanks.

So many people died on the roads, that there are now speed limits, and lives are being saved. So, the next time you get pulled over for speeding, texting, driving recklessly, etc; thank the officer for doing their job. They may have just saved your life.

Now, garbage men and women, I do dislike you. Could you maybe pick up in the afternoon, instead of waking me up at 5 a.m.? :-)

Little League Baseball!

Yesterday, I went to watch a couple of  Junior High teams play baseball. I overheard one of the coaches tell a player, "Look, you know the principles of good sportsmanship. You know the League doesn't allow temper tantrums, shouting at the umpire, or abusive language." "Yes sir, I understand."
"Good, the coach said, now would you please explain that to your mother?!"

These kids were good! Much better than when I was in Jr. High. They had technique, they were focused, the catchers and pitchers had cannons for arms but the hitters were every bit as good. There were a few errors but they were mostly bad hops that were very tough to field.

They turned double plays like big leaguers. The pitchers were throwing fast balls, change ups, split finger fast balls, even curves that were not fully developed sharp curves, but they did serve up some sliders.

I spoke with one of the coaches and he told me they don’t teach the young lads the full "junk" pitching until he feels they're ready, which made me happy.

Back when I played as a youngster, it was strictly fast balls and change ups. That was it. As you might imagine, there were a lot of runs scored. I was a catcher, mainly because I was the biggest kid on the team.

Defensively, I was very good. I just couldn't hit. That was a big problem for me that would plague my throughout my playing days. I think it was just standing at the plate with no protection.
Who knew the pictures were erratic, and you never knew where the ball was going. We had a pitcher named Edgar. We ended calling him Edgar the butcher because he hit so many hitters.

Fond memories, and yesterday's game brought them back, if only for a few short hours.

See you tomorrow.

Coffee is Bad for You?

Just think of the benefits of having coffee! It gives you the jitters, it can be bitter if burned, it stains when you spill it, it stains your teeth and (bonus) it gives you bad breath. I love the stuff!

According to http://www.living-traditionally.com/top-13-nutrition-lies-made-world-sick-fat/, coffee has gotten a bad reputation in the past. It is true that coffee can mildly elevate blood pressure in the short term (49).   However, long term studies show that coffee may actually reduce your risk of some serious diseases. Coffee drinkers:

Have up to a 67% lower risk of Type II diabetes (50, 51). Are at a much lower risk of getting Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s (52, 53). Have up to an 80% lower risk of liver diseases like cirrhosis (54, 55).

Caffeine also helps to mobilize fatty acids from the fat tissues, boost metabolism and increase exercise performance by an average of 11-12% (56, 57, 58).   Many studies have examined the effects of caffeine on the brain, showing that it can improve mood, memory, reaction time, vigilance and overall brain function (59).

You may be surprised to hear that coffee is also loaded with antioxidants. In fact, it is the biggest source of antioxidants in the modern diet, outranking both fruits and vegetables, combined (60, 61). If you’re sensitive to caffeine or it tends to disrupt your sleep, then green tea has many of the same health benefits but a smaller amount of caffeine.

Bottom Line: Coffee contains very large amounts of antioxidants. Studies show that coffee drinkers are at a much lower risk of developing many serious diseases.

Interestingly enough, I live in a state who's largest religious base, says no coffee drinking. In fact, no hot drinks at all. That's what the "Word of Wisdom" declares. It is found in the "Doctrine of Covenents", section 89. “9. And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly."

Which hot drinks? It's not clarified. Later on, it was somehow interpreted as coffee and non-herbal tea. Even though hot chocolate is a hot drink and has far fewer benefits than coffee, it is deemed proper to drink.

Why am I writing about this? Am I trying to bash Mormons? No! I'm just very confused about banning a drink that is so good for you. It just doesn't make sense to me and I would welcome a healthy dialogue with an LDS person regarding the entire word of wisdom.

This is a strange state in which to live. It's beautiful, and that's the biggest reason my wife and I still live here. Somebody please help me understand.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to enjoy my morning cup of jo.

See you tomorrow.
