International Women's Day!

In honor of International Women's Day, today I will wear capris.

According to Wikipedia, International Women's Day (IWD), also called International Working Women's Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political, and social achievements.

Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily in Europe, including Russia. In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day.

In other regions, however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. This is a day which some people celebrate by wearing purple ribbons.

While I think it's an important day, I wonder why there's not an International Men's Day. Guess what? There is! Who knew? I get the fact that women have been repressed, treated like second hand people, undervalued and are still horribly mistreated in many parts of the world. That is very wrong. Horrific in some cases.

I guess I'm thinking about an International Married Man's Day. I would never make light of the things that women have had to endure and keeping in mind that I'm a comedian, let's dig into it.

The old but true saying, "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy", is a very real condition in far too many homes. You never hear, "If Daddy ain't happy...". Almost never. In non-abusive environments, why is that true? It's ridiculous. Guess what? If Mama ain't happy, let Mama go out and do something that will make her happy. Don't take it out on the family.

Go shopping, get a manicure, a massage, check into a hotel to get away for a day - - whatever it takes. No one should live in fear. I think it would be money well spent and the whole family, including Mama, will be happy.

It will also give Daddy a break from walking on egg shells for a day or two. No need to have to do that. If Mama gets mad, she should quietly confront the person, most likely Daddy, and talk things out. Don't make him try to figure out what's wrong. We don't understand you in the first place.

The same is true for men. If you're angry, don't yell or punch walls. Talk to your wife politely and directly. If everyone were to follow this advice, households would be so much better, and that phrase, "If Mama ain't happy..." would go away.

That being said, ladies, Happy International Women's Day!

See you tomorrow.
