Running

Running is a lot like archery. In running, you need a lot of practice and you shoot arrows at targets. Wait, is that right?

Nine weeks ago, I decided I wanted to run. I began thinking of things that I could do, rather than things I can't. I got a program called C25k, meaning sitting on the couch to being able to run a 5K in 8 weeks. I was skeptical at first, until the second week started and I noticed improvement.

The program doesn't apply interval running, where you run for a period of time, then walk for a period of time, thereby keeping your legs fresh for the next segment. I find this method preferable over running for 30 minutes straight.

I don't care about the time it takes me to finish. I just want to finish. There's a 5K on the 26th of this month, very close to where we live, so I'm going to sign up for that one. I'm anxious to get the first one under my belt, so to speak.

My wife, Heather, has run marathons, half marathons and 5Ks. A 5K is nothing for her, so I'm happy she's taking the time to run with me. Yesterday, I ran 2.38 miles and I would have kept going, except the sun went down and I didn't want to run in the dark.

I started with too fast of a pace, so when I slowed down a little, it was much easier. Once I conquer a few 5ks, I will begin training for a 10K. That will, no doubt, take some time. Eventually, I would love to run a half marathon. That would be a major achievement for me.

I want to be the person who has a little bit more in the gas tank approaching the end so I can kick it into gear and finish strong. In the meantime, I'm also going to brush up on my archery.

See you tomorrow.
