Puppies

I think if you buy a "toy" Schnauzer, it should come with rubber teeth. Ouch!

I know there are some people who don't like dogs. Some don't enjoy cats. Others don't care for birds. In my view, they're missing out, but if they don't want to have a pet, they should never get one. There is way too much animal abuse going on. Unfortunately, it seems like we see stories of abuse almost daily. It breaks my heart.

As I write this, our toy Schnauzer, named Maggie, is asleep on my lap. We have another toy Schnauzer that we rescued from a puppy mill. She's very sweet, but has no desire to socialize or play. Her previous caretakers saw her only as a chance to make money. She's worn out from having so many litters of puppies. As soon as the owners decided they didn't want to make money from breeding puppies, they just wanted to get rid of her. All she does, mostly, is sleep, which is fine with us. She's earned the rest.

We had a miniature Schnauzer, named Mulder. Yes, named after the X-Files character. He was very smart and very special. He did a lot of tricks and loved to play. He was closer to my wife than to me. They had an amazing bond.

We used to live in the mountains where no one leashed their dogs. They roamed the woods together, and never bothered anyone. In fact, there were two older labs who would open our front door and come into our bedroom to say hello. We had french doors and never locked them, so all they had to do was reach up and pull down on the handle to get in. They were sweet.

One night, during a snow storm, Murder didn't come home. We were worried sick and decided to trudge through the snow to find him. Picture this; we're out in a field of snow at two in the morning, with flashlights, yelling for Mulder. I'm sure there had to be neighbors who were thinking, "These people are crazy. Its just a TV show".

He showed up about three, warm and happy. He had to be at a neighborhood family's house. We lost him to brain cancer a couple of years ago. Putting him down was one of the toughest decisions ever. But, after his passing, we got Sammy, the toy Schnauzer from the puppy mill. Who knows what would have become of her?

Pets are wonderful, but not for the irresponsible. If people don't want pets, they shouldn't have them. Its just not fair to those wonderful animals.

See you tomorrow.
