Grandchildren

I'm so old, I walked into an antique shop and they sold ME.

Sometimes, when I think about my age, I wonder how the heck did I get to be an old man? The only people who think I'm young are people 70 or above. Can I be honest with you? That doesn't help. I remember when I bought my first house. I was 29 and life was good. I had a great job, money in the bank, a new car and a maid.

In 1989, I got my first big gig. I opened for Sinbad, Gilbert Gottfried and Michael Winslow. I was signed by Sinbad's agent. Even though the agency couldn't find any work for me because Hollywood thought I was too close to the style of Jay Leno, I had all of the time in the world ahead of me. Now I'm sick and cannot do so much of the things I used to. The world has turned too many times.

But then, the biggest blessings of all come along. My grandchildren! What joy they bring! My children are, and always have been blessings, and there's something about a grandchild that just melts the heart. I am blessed to have five, with another due in January!

Earlier this year, I got to spend a month back in Atlanta and Mississippi, which is where they live. My daughter, Sarah and her family, live in the Atlanta area, while my son, Eric and his family live in Southern Mississippi. It was so much fun! I first want to Atlanta and spent time with Sarah, her husband Steve, and grandchildren Katie and Isaac.

Katie just started first grade and is not only brilliant, but also very funny! It was interesting and heart warming to observe their family dynamic. It was great spending time with all of them, including my wonderful son-in-law, Steve. Its hectic, as you might imagine, but it works very well for them. I am very pleased with what I experienced while I was there.

In Mississippi, my son, Eric, his wonderful wife, Lesley and Boaz, Abby and Titus, aged in that order, were also a complete joy to be around. Their family dynamic is completely different than that of my daughter's, and yet it works well for them, too. It was so good to spend the time with each family.

The grandkids are such a blessing! I realized that I wouldn't have these precious angels if I were younger. So, even though I'm so old that in my youth, rainbows were black and white, I'm blessed to be 57.

See you tomorrow.
