I hate diets. I'm on one now. Actually, I'm on two diets. You just can't seem to eat enough on one.
We all know that dieting is tough. Even if you really get "in the zone", it's still difficult to maintain it for extended periods of time. My wife and I were on the "Body for Life" program. Turns out it was the body for 12 weeks program. I think we went on vacation or something when it was over, and there it went. We used to diet and go to the gym every day and loved it.
I know that "dieting" doesn't work; it must become a lifestyle. It's just so hard to do that. So, programs like Nutrisystem or Jenny Craig, in my opinion, are worthless unless you plan on staying on them for the rest of your life. Who can afford that? Most diets are pretty exciting when you first go on them. You're losing weight and you're not just excited for yourself, you try to recruit others, which is very annoying to the others.
Age is another factor. The older we get, the more difficult it becomes to lose weight on any diet. Our metabolism slows as we grow older, making it tougher. I'm also one of those people who hates exercise. I do love walking, but I have to walk with someone else, if I don't want the paramedics to come along each time.
I know the theory. Calories in versus calories out. The problem is the calories you have to drop are the fun and delicious calories. People can tell me all day long how fruit tastes so much better than the fat calories, but I believe that pizza outweighs any fruit, any time.
The thing that seems to work best for me is to take it really easy on the groceries during the week, then have a free Sunday. Wait, I think it should be the other way around. Waffles and eggs for breakfast, a cheeseburger combo for lunch and something sensible in the evening, like a nice rib eye. Now there's a diet I can stick with for the rest of my life. The problem is, I would be one of those guys who would have to be taken out in a piano case.
I think I'll do it the right way. At least for a while, but if you have one of those piano cases, please hang onto it.
See you tomorrow.
