Running? Not for me.

Every time I try to run, I run into trouble.

I think 57 might be a little late for most of us to start running races. At least that's my case. Several months back, I was kind of bored, being on disability and all, so I decided to run. Why run? Because some of the most wonderful people I've ever met are runners.

No kidding. I've mentioned the Hometown Heroes before, but they deserve mention again. They are out training and cross training every day, then show up at Sugarhouse Park every Saturday at seven o'clock in the morning, to run in frigid temperatures that send most of us indoors for the day. They are amazing.

So, I decided to run. I got one of those couch to 5K apps for my phone and went to work. I was very diligent in my workouts. I would run every other day, and work on abs and upper body in between run days.

I finally was able to run the 5K distance on the treadmill, but the racing part, of course, is not run on a treadmill. So, I went out one day and ran four miles on a local track where football practice was in full swing. That way, if I had a seizure, there would be people around who could help.

I  ran four miles that day, but my knees hurt pretty bad. So, I took a week off until they felt better, so I began running two miles every other day and the 5K distance on Saturdays. I ran the 5K, and my left knee is a mess. I can barely walk. I have a doctors appointment this afternoon to have I checked out. Its been a month of icing and no luck. It's getting worse every day, so I think its time to get it checked out.

I hope it doesn't require surgery to repair. I've had too many operations in my time to even think about another. But, what are you going to do? So, I've decided that running is not right. Stationary bike rides, yes. The last time I rode, I went 20 miles, building up from six. And you know what? No knee pain, other than that already inflicted by running.

I can increase my cardio by thinking about the failed marriages and child support checks. That gets my heart rate up to a level that could never be achieved on a treadmill.

See you tomorrow.
