MSG

Normally, I don't worry about MSG at a Chinese restaurant. I worry more about CAT.

Nobody likes MSG. Don't know why. Tastes good. Maybe it makes you a little nervous, but so does coffee ...

Some people think that MSG is harmless, but that's not the case. Those of us who are allergic know better. It's terrible for you, even if you're not allergic.

MSG is an acronym for monosodium glutamate. A silent killer that’s worse than alcohol, nicotine, and other drugs and is likely lurking in your kitchen cabinets, freezer and even your child’s school cafeteria. It’s a flavor enhancer that’s known widely as an addition to Chinese food, but it's actually added to thousands of the foods you eat.

I had dinner with family last weekend. This restaurant advertises no MSG is used in their food. By my body's reaction to the food, I don't believe them. I felt like I had a horrible flue, all night and most of the next day.

Last night, we cooked some frozen pizza rolls and, again, the flu like symptoms returned. My wife looked up some of the ingredients this morning and, sure enough, MSG, cleverly disguised with a different name or abbreviation.

MSG reactions have been reported from soaps, shampoos, hair conditioners, and cosmetics, where MSG is hidden in ingredients with names that include the words "hydrolyzed," "amino acids," and/or "protein."  Most sun block creams and insect repellents also contain MSG.

So, it's not just foods we need to beware of, MSG or other harmful additives are found in so many products where you might least expect it. The most recent reactions to my body now has me convinced that whole natural foods are the way to go. I will never again eat any food from a restaurant without asking if they have MSG in their food first.

I also will never eat any frozen food without ensuring the ingredients are safe. I think these flavor enhancers should be illegal. The FDA, in my opinion, should be held accountable for every single MSG medical incident.

It's unconscionable that our government allows these poisons into our food and cleaning products.

See you tomorrow.
