In the short term...

I have short term memory loss, which is really cool. There's no such thing as reruns on TV, I can buy my own birthday presents and still be surprised when I open them, and this year I hid my own Easter eggs.

I can provide detailed accounts about most anything in my distant past, but I won't remember what the television show I watched yesterday was about. I can't begin to tell you how many times I have seen a movie trailer and told my wife we needed to see it, only to hear that we've already seen it.

That doesn't bother me in the least. I can watch it again and it is new to me. The only time I'm bothered by it is when I'm talking about something and I completely forget what I'm talking about or why. That's embarrassing, but I just laugh it off.

I can recall phone numbers and names from long ago. I still remember my California drivers license number, and I've been gone for 17 years. I have no idea what my current license number is. I can remember old home addresses, but I still have to look up my current address each time I need it.

My father was the same way with phone numbers. I'm not sure if he had short term memory issues, but he was a walking, talking phone book. It was amazing.

Some people have photographic memories, which I'm not sure I would want to have. Sure, they remember everything, almost perfectly, but that includes bad memories too. I am very happy to forget about those things and just remember what I can about good things that happen.

I was always good at memorizing lines for a play, my comedy sets and statistics from my favorite sports teams. It's difficult to do some of those things now. Fortunately, I haven't been cast in a play for 40 years and I don't do a lot of comedy anymore. Sports stats mean very little to me these days. I'm still as passionate about my team, I just don't remember the statistics, which doesn't bother me because I can look them up.

Getting older is not for the faint of heart.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to write today's blog.

See you tomorrow.
