What's the difference between Paula Deen and a popular July 4th fireworks item? One is a fire cracker, while the other is a fired cracker.
There is a great deal of debate over whether or not Paula should have so much backlash over the fact that she had used the "N" word. She has lost nearly all of her endorsements and her TV show. I think the punishment is well beyond the crime.
I think the weakest people in this whole mess are the executives who made the decision to distance themselves from her. I think they are wimps. I wonder how many of them have used the same word. If they did, they should resign immediately.
There have been celebrities who have said much worse, but didn't face the same scrutiny. Don Imus, the once extremely popular national talk radio host, made very derogatory remarks about female African American basketball players. He was fired, but was later reinstated. His remarks were much worse than Paula Dean using the word years ago.
Many of Deen's following have said they are going to boycott the retailers who have dropped the falling star. I wish people would stick to it, but most people who make such statements do not follow through. Even if they did, the customer base of the retail giants is so large, it wouldn't make a dent in their revenue.
Look, the woman has apologized again and again. It's time to stop vilifying the woman. It's time to stop judging her. She has been punished enough. I think she has learned her lesson and the example set should be enough for other celebrities.
Enough. It's not like she sang happy birthday to a vicious dictator.
See you tomorrow.
