Painful Computing

It’s times like these when I am sitting in bed, with my computer on my lap when I think, "I really wish I had bought a laptop."

Portable computers are so small now, and growing smaller each year, while cellphones are getting larger. I can do so much with my phone. I prefer the Samsung III GS, while others prefer a more compact phone, like an Iphone. Others just to make a call.

I think it's wonderful that you can surf the Internet, send text messages, email, watch TV and movies and even Skype with cell phones. I'm writing this blog on mine.

In the early days of the cellular business, I was actively involved in building the infrastructure to get the beast rolling, so it wouldn't die at retail like it did the first time.

People had a hard time getting used to them, although everyone wanted one. They were bulky, ugly and if you had one installed in your car, you were the envy of all who knew you.

I owned a Nissan Sentra then, and had a phone installed. I remember going through a car wash once and when I walked over to get my car, the attendant said "You really should upgrade your car."  Everyone thought you needed to be rich to own one. There were no plans. Just $.45 per minute. Even if the party didn't answer, you still were charged $.22.5. It was expensive.

Consumers had difficulty understanding that cell phones were sophisticated two way radios. I saw people return their phones because they couldn't get a dial tone. No kidding. It was and is a radio.
The integration of really fine cameras is a tremendous innovation. Oftentimes, you'll hear someone say, "Wait! I need to get my camera!" as they get their cell phone. And the apps! So many! What to choose? I go by the reviews of the people who have purchased and used the application. The reviews are really spot on, for the most part.

Then the music. The memory killer. It takes up so much space, that a phone can become very sluggish. There's a fix for that. The cloud.  You can upload all of your music from your phone to the cloud and then get a free app to play the music. It's awesome.

Try it. You'll like it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I must get this stupid desk top computer off my lap. I think I'm getting a blood clot.

See you tomorrow.
