Depression

Yesterday, I was so depressed, my shrink made me bypass the copay and pay the whole bill up front.

Depression is such a deceptive, evil animal. It can trick you into believing that you are worthless, when all the while, there are friends and family, who love you and are praying for you.

Some people have never experienced depression. These are the geniuses who say things like "Just stop the pitty party, and get over it."  It may sound card hearted, but the truth is, they just don't understand. They want to help, but have no idea what to do.

Those who have been in a dark depression know that words, especially harsh words, are detrimental to the person's state or mind, especially if they are suicidal.

If you really want to help your friend, and it's really bad, take them to the ER. Don't wait. Even if you have to call 911, do it. They need treatment, not sympathy, anger, alcohol, etc. They need treatment, and they need it now. If they are already seeing a doctor, use your judgment.

A couple of years ago, I had to start dealing with the fact that I wasn't going to be able to do nearly all of the things I had grown used to. It was horrible. I began to plan my demise. My mind was chemically imbalanced, more than usual. (joke) I couldn't see that I was valuable.

This is where many people who want to help, can't. It's like trying to talk rationally with a drunk. I told my wife about my plan, which was a desperate cry for help. She understood. She has been there. She took me to the ER, and I stayed in the hospital, working with mental health professionals until they decided it was safe to go home, WITH a treatment plan.

I still see a therapist and a psychiatrist regularly, and things are much better. As for the people who try, but don't get it? I cut them out of my life. Cold? No, survival.
